With their recent live performance of Jeff Buckley’s ‘Grace,’ Scottish rockers the Cinematics made the biggest fan of the late rocker cry: his mom.

“I fell completely silent and just stared for a while, “front man Scott Rinning tells Spinner of meeting Mary Guibert at their Austin show. “I tried to say something fairly incoherent. I can’t really remember what she said. Someone told me she said something about [our cover] being one of the most beautiful interpretations of her son’s music she’d heard.”

“She had a teary eye,” he continues, “and - - I’m not proud, it’s not very rock ‘n’ roll - - but my eyes were also over-powered by this weird human activity. “

Here is that video of that night…

Last week, the Cinematics candidly shared the story of their humbling encounter with Jeff Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert. They say that every story has two sides, so Spinner spoke to Guibet to get her recollection of the charismatic Scots’ tribute to her son. Guibert told Spinner, “It was a courageous choice to start with, passionately and beautifully rendered.”

The Cinematics were unaware that Guibert was in attendance, and front man Scott Rinning told us, “Had I known she was in the audience I would never have played ‘Grace.’” Guibert praised their performance, saying, “I was deeply moved. What a gift. It was great to meet them afterward. Very sweet, very talented young men. I wish them great success.”
